A Minister I Really Respect…

If you’re not from NYC you may not have heard of him, but Rev. Al Sharpton is a bit of a fixture around here – he’s even run for mayor (and I voted for him). The man says things that are so true and says them with a frankness that’s wonderfully refreshing. Here’s the latest from him…
It amazes me when I looked at California and saw churches that had nothing to say about police brutality, nothing to say when a young black boy was shot while he was wearing police handcuffs, nothing to say when the they overturned affirmative action, nothing to say when people were being delegated into poverty, yet they were organizing and mobilizing to stop consenting adults from choosing their life partners. There is something immoral and sick about using all of that power to not end brutality and poverty, but to break into people’s bedrooms and claim that God sent you.
Can we clone him? Maybe make a few white versions of him and put them in places like Kansas so his message reaches a broader audience?
Needless to say guys like him are another reason why I love New York. Find me another place where a prominent black minister is saying things like that… And then there’s our blind, black governor who is trying his hardest to get us gay marriage, and the new (black) state senate majority leader who decided he’d rather lose his position than compromise his principles on things like his support for gay marriage (3 anti-gay Democratic senators were threatening to caucus with the Republicans if they didn’t get a vote on gay marriage taken off the table – in the end they lost and he won but the point is he wouldn’t use our civil rights as a bargaining chip for him to get a great deal or power)…
I really can’t imagine living anywhere but NYC…
While he may be on the money about this gay issue, he’s usually the boy who cried wolf when it comes to black issues…
You can’t be serious, Rawtop. How can someone as intelligent as you appear to be admire Sharpton? Doesn’t the name “Tawana Brawley” mean anything to you? Does it not bother you what Sharpton and his pals Alton Maddox and C. Vernon Mason did to the prosecutor in that case, Steven Pagones? Sharpton is a race huckster of the first order. While he professes to protect the rights and well-being of blacks, where is his outrage when black cops are shot or when there is black on black crime?
I thought you had more sense about you, rawtop, but it now appears that your ultra liberalism has blinded you to the true nature of this self-promoting con artist.
rev Al, is the worst. the first person to run to any issue and get his face all up on the camera. hasn’t really done a damn thing for any issue black/gay/etc other then run to it, say something to get on TV, then vanish after the news crews have gone home.
I for one do not believe one word that comes out of this man’s mouth. He is nothing but a windbag who has furthered no ones cause at all. This bit you bring up about California was only so he could get press. If you think for one second that man is pro gay you need some serious counseling. I am very surprised at you Rawtop… very surprised… All Al Sharpton is about is the money and the publicity, without it he is nothing but a windbag….
Is there really anyone with any sort of intelligence that has not heard of Al Sharpton.
if you think he “gets it” then i feel sorry for you, cause well, you just dont “get it”. it’s easy to spew out a quote to get you some pub on left-blogs, but when it comes down to it. where is he with his actions? all talk, all “look at me” but no actions to back it up.
You can’t be serious. This guy is the biggest piece of garbage that ever walked. He’s only interested in headlines, and is the most fake person to ever walk on this earth. Al Sharpton would spit on gay people if the media were not watching. He’s seriously one of the most worthless, fake, and media hungry people ever. People who actually believe in Al Sharpton are so out of touch with the rest of the world it’s not even funny. Probably explains why your wondering if people have ever heard of him. People in Australia have heard of Al Sharpton. He has no soul.
Could “keithninety” really be Sean Hannity’s screen name ?? LOL
Wow, just when I thought your site couldn’t get any worse! It was fun and entertaining, then you started doing all those other sites, then you started getting bitchy about some things, and now this.
You are SOOOOO being delete from my bookmark menu. I really couldn’t care less about anything you have to say from this point on.
I’m with rawTOP here. I like most of what I hear coming from Sharpton. At least he’s adressing problems by talking about them and putting them before the public. All most of us can do is talk about such issues; Sharpton does that also, but does so with a bigger voice than the rest of us have.
RT, you’re losing it, man. Most blacks and certainly most Xtian blacks hate homosexuals. That’s why so many black men suffer and have to live on the down-low. Black culture as it’s spun by Sharpton, Jackson and it’s ilk is opportunistic and thrives on victimisations. It was black and Latino voters who defeated gay marriage in California because of their myopic, rabid homophobia. Just try being openly gay in one of Sharpton’s churches or in one of the neighbourhoods where he canvasses so much consensus and see what happens.
Anglo-Saxon/Germanic culture, with all its defects, has proven time and time again to be the most gay-friendly.
LOL @ all the white fags above. When Al Sharpton ran for president in 2004 his platform included FULL marriage equality. Not domestic partnerships. Not civil unions, but full marriage rights. Who else did that, and what the hell did he have to gain? Kucinich, I suppose, was the only one. Sharpton has been a gay rights proponent for some time, a true civil rights activist, but you stupid fags only notice minorities when they’re doing something that offends you. Pathetic.
He can talk all he damn pleases, doesn’t mean he’s actually done anything. The man’s a windbag. Everyone else is right, your Ultra Liberalism is blinding you.
You are absolutely right, Rawtop. And also…having gay sex does not make you a minority. Do not compare the two.
You’re saying everybody is useless unless they can hold a political office? That’s quite a bold claim. Most people working in Charity don’t hold any political office, same with rescue workers, and people actually making changes.
