I Got Quoted In Next Magazine…

About a month ago I was contacted by a writer for NEXT magazine. If you’ve lived in New York you’ll know it’s one of the “party rags” here… But they do like to do serious articles and with Worlds AIDS Day this week, barebacking was the topic of this week’s featured article. Take a look at his article – “Bare Truth”…
When I was chatting with him I didn’t realize he was quite so pro-condom. I got his email that the article was up last night and as I was standing in Rawhide reading the first part of the article on my iPhone, I worried that if he was that pro condom that he might not give me a fair shake. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised when I saw he quoted me extensively, and I was also surprised at the substance of what he quoted. For the most part it gets right to the center of my argument – that the bias against barebacking is largely blown out of proportion. If you want to get all riled up about things that kill gay men, go after smoking.
Anyway, thumbs up to the author for being pro-condom but still managing to be fair and balanced.
Cool article. Even though I bb with my partner, I have no problem with people who’s pro condom, especially since being gay is already a major issue where I live. I volunteered with HIV organization, working with poz people and it convinced me that it’s not worth the risk with anons, especially when I see what to me is the worst of the opportunistic disease, (norwegian scabies?) – saw what must have been a very itchy arm on a 40 yrs woman.
Most of the poz are not even gay, or IDU. They’re mostly kids and women. The gay poz, according to the program director don’t even bother to come for free weekly check ups (HIV drugs are subsidized here).
While I don’t mind condom sex, nothing beats the feeling of trusting someone enough to fuck him bareback, and IMO, gay culture is possibly not suited for “wear condoms, stop HIV” approach. Maybe they could use a more proactive angle, get tested, get medicated, get med help, since it’s the unmedicated poz who’s spreading HIV. I remember thinking why can’t these gays stop fucking everyone, when we visited the house of a positive 30 yrs old women unable to care for her 6 mths old poz baby born with the worst case of hep C (eyes shut, bluish skins), the result of a promiscuous bisexual father, but who am I kidding?
