Vote for Obama
14 October 2008 | 21 Comments
It’s been a while since I got all that political on here, but I figured it was time again… 😉
I think it’s come to a point in the election where it’s clear McCain/Palin don’t have much of a clue and the calm, steady, competent choice is Obama/Biden. It’s not just about gay issues…
- Obama (and the people advise him) are better on the economy. Early in the campaign McCain admitted he didn’t know anything about the economy. When he was asked who he’d consider for Treasury Secretary the first name he mentioned was Warren Buffet – an Obama supporter. And his suggestion that the federal government pay for everyone’s bad loans is just offensive to those of us who only took on as much as we could afford. Plus, Robert Reich (I LOVE that man’s mind) is such a strong Obama supporter he supported him in the primaries, despite his history with the Clintons.
- Obama is better on foreign affairs. Why? ‘Cause it’s about diplomacy, not war. The rest of the World is rooting for Obama to win, which means he’ll have an easier time making peace, which is what we need right now.
- Obama is better on civil rights. So much has been taken away from us in regards to civil rights in the past 8 years, we need someone who will stop that and put it back where it should be.
- On every issue except gay marriage, Obama is better on gay rights. Since when is marriage our only issue? There are so many others and McCain/Palin are almost always on the wrong side of the issue, or their support for us is half-hearted at best.
Frankly, I don’t understand US voters. I mean how was it that George W. Bush won the last election? 86% of the people in Manhattan voted for Kerry. That’s about how it should have been nationwide, IMO. I don’t even understand how it could have been close, nevertheless Bush won…
Actually, I sorta do get it. Bush won the last election because of bigotry toward gays. Outlawing gay marriage is what got a lot of conservative voters to the polls and it was enough to get him elected. Think about that for a moment. We might be out of Iraq by now and not in a deep economic hole if it hadn’t been for the fact that so many straight people hate us so much that they went out of their way to make sure we wouldn’t be considered their equals.
This time around it’s racial bigotry, “the Bradley effect” might make McCain win, even though Obama is ahead in the polls. Curious how the news media is talking openly about racism this time around, but didn’t talk about homophobia last time. But again, we might have the weaker candidate win simply because of bigotry. When you think of it that way America deserves whatever misery it gets if its politics are guided by hatred and fear…
Take a look at what average Republicans are willing to say openly these days. I can see why they don’t use the word “moral” much anymore…
How can a Log Cabin (gay) Republican feel good about being a Republican when members of their party use the words like “Commie Faggot” so easily? And no one in that crowd seemed bothered by what what going on. Do you think any of those people would care if they saw you getting gay bashed?
If you’re one of those racists who just can’t see yourself voting for a black man, then as the video below points, out Obama isn’t exactly black – he’s half white. So “vote for the white half”… 🙂
Seriously… Your freedoms are at stake in this election. Three liberal Supreme Court justices are thinking of retiring. If you can’t see it any other way, vote for the candidate who will appoint the best judges.
And if you can’t say Barak Obama’s name without saying his middle name in there too… Do everyone a favor and just stay home.
The problem with democracy is that people like the woman above vote. Yet democracy is still the best system in the long run, but it only works if the voters are educated, and guess which party is best with education?
Just to push the point a little further… In last night’s debate, in the context of discussing hate speech at his political rallies, John McCain said the following…
That’s right, he said “Let me just say, categorically, I’m proud of the people that come to our rallies.” I was shocked. That said, he has corrected some of the people who’ve called Obama a Muslim and a terrorist, and been boo’d for it. So who knows what he really thinks.
That said, look what people at McCain rallies said to a reporter from Al Jazeera…
I’m sorry, but there’s way too much of that shit in the Republican party. It’s time for good Republicans to stand up and say something, but I seriously doubt that will happen. I mean Bush is killing and torturing people and simultaneously wrapping himself in the mantle of Christianity. Meanwhile real Christians, who follow the pacifist teachings of Christ, have said practically nothing. There’s a reason why I’m down on the Republicans – this stuff has been going on in their party since the 70s. I know ’cause I was at some of the Moral Majority rallies with Anita Bryant and Jerry Falwell back then. It’s gotten worse and worse and people have just gone along with the fear and hatred. It needs to stop. If we’re lucky Obama will win, things will get better, and what the hate mongers say will just sound empty, hollow and bitter.
Please, please, PLEASE don’t tell me you think all Republicans think like the woman in the YouTube video.
With all respect to you and your beliefs, I think your political blog represents what is fundamentally wrong with alot of peeps in this country. It’s this type of us and them mentality that keeps Americans divided. The tone of your piece is really no different then the tone I see in the Republican videos you posted … it’s derisive. To generally insult all Republicans and specifically Log Cabin Republicans, while at the same time being ready to drop a friend because they have different political beliefs than you seem extreme to me.
I am an American Gay Man – not a Gay American Man, so my concern for the welfare of my country trumps my concern for Gay issues. I’ve been in a relationship for 25 years and I honestly have more rights and protections now then I ever did when I started with my life partner. None of the Presidents we have ever had did anything directly beneficial to advance Gay rights. Those advances have come through slow changes in society and the state courts.
I will not vote for Obama nor will I vote for McCain. Neither man is truly qualified to be President of this country, in my opinion. Both major parties are corrupt and basically the same and share full responsibility for the IRAQ war and the current melt-down of our economy. Our country has some major problems that will be difficult to overcome – and all the partisan bickering among the parties and their supporters is a major distraction to solving those real and dangerous issues.
You’re web site is always a turn-on to read, but your injection of politics into the blog tonight is a major limp dick in my opinion.
God speed to you friend …
people like you always make me laugh. You live in manhattan, obviously ignoring ‘flyover’ country. However in ignoring this large swath of the country you forget a few things.
1. Most people in this country do not want to live in a socialist country. Granted most great socialist reforms came in the bailout, but i personally dont want to have nationalized healthcare because i dont want to have to pay for other peoples mistakes, and if you cant find a health policy for 2500 bucks, than your having serious problems.
2. Most foreign countries want obama to win so they can take advantage of him. Do you remember Jimmy Carter. Do you remember hostages in iran? Its about peace and diplomacy but sometimes you just gotta fight. Iran has already set pre-conditions to meeting with the US? So its ok for them but not for us? and what kind of message are we sending to our allies when we meet with their enemies without preconditions? UNfortunately we do not live in a world where holding hands and buying the world a coke is going to work.
3. Mccain will most likely pick some very good dems to advise on the economy as well as republicans. That is mccains strength, he has so many friends on both sides of the isle, although its pretty sad how the dems are abandoning him and calling him a racist now. I personally would love to see barny frank, gregory meeks, christopher dodd and maxine waters frogmarched out of congress for criminal negligance.
4. Bush did not win on intolerance of gays, despite what you may think living on the lil island of manhattan. Bush won becuase kerry was lame, a very bad choice for president. He was a typical cut and run democrat, when we needed a steadfast leader, and unfortunately the only leader-ish person we had was bush.
5. This one has nothing to do with either canadate, but WTF are we choosing senators to be president. GOVERNORS make good presidnets because of EXECUTIVE EXPERIENCE. Lets go down the list, Regan (governor of california), Clinton (governor of Arkansas). What executive experience does a senator have?
6. If gay rights are your only issue than god bless man, but as sdbbfun said, im an american bi man, not a bi american, so i put my country first. Thats why i practice what i preach and am going to iraq/afganistan. Not becuase some recruiter lied to me or took advantage, but because its my duty as an american.
7. This country does need some moral standards. I personally HATE backroom sex. I prefer if im going to fuck, do it at a hotel room or my place or their place. Sex is the ultimate display of public affection, and i hate PDA anyway.
8. If you think your ‘loss of rights’ under the bush administration (i beg you to tell me 1 right you lost that has affected you that was done directly by the bush administration) was bad, wait untill the coming obama thugocracy. Hes already using ‘truth squads’ in missouri and has a history of stifiling free choice and free speech in elections in chicago, and thats not who i want at the top spot of this country.
9. The people you keep around you says alot about yourself. If you hit a church for 20 years, that says alot about you. You work with an unreptant domestic terrorist, that says alot about you. I dont like what i see.
Overall bro, stick to fucking twinks. When it comes to politics your misinformed and caught up in obama mania. Remember, ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.
Fuck obama, a worthless piece of shit who did nothing during his two years on the senate but plan a way to get idiots like you to vote for him.. vote for change. LOL.. he definitely is not the one to talk about change..neither is biden. Change is record not I hate bush so I’ll vote a community organizer as president.
I don’t like either Candidates. McCain would be a much more serious choice if he didn’t have that wacko as his sidekick, that’s for sure.
I agree with the third poster, sdbbfun, what he had to say. Especially his first Paragraph. You have to keep an open mind on both parties and not stick with one. They both have their bad moments.
Generally, I like the Democratic and Socialist Ideals, such as Free Healthcare for every person, taxing people who are making higher incomes (but only to a degree), and keeping business in America by not outsourcing. One thing I loath about the Democrats is with Gun Control. Banning guns at this point is not going to reduce any violence, as gun violence usually results from illegal weapons that aren’t registered anyways. Gun related deaths don’t have much to do with guns, but the attitutde from the people of the country. Finland has 1 handgun for every family, and they have almost zero gun related deaths.
My father worked in a Dangerous Area of Brooklyn working for Con Edison, and he wouldn’t have lived without having a firearm at his side, because Brownsville was so Dangerous in the late 80’s, when NYC crime was at its peak. I thought you were against intrusion of lives. Gun control intrudes, especially when I can’t trust the Police to arrive in 20 seconds in an intruder breaks into my house. There’s one cop for every 500 people, they can’t gaurd everyone at the same time, and I don’t blame them. That’s why we need guns for self defense.
Well, if you couldn’t tell, I love guns. They’re our Second Amendment Right, and if you take away Amendments, you take away what America stands for. Since there’s nothing in the Constitution that’s Anti-Gay, or Anti-Anybody, we can change that, and I certainly hope we end all discrimination.
Kerry was lame? Haha? Look at the state the US is in now. Who’s looking lame now? Unfortunately, Bush’s stupid policies not only affected the US government, but the entire middle class and poor people as well. Republican-style capitalism does not work. Time will vindicate us Obama supporters. Buh-bye, log cabin.
Your first Paragraph gives reason to rip up anything else in the Constitution because it was written in a different time.
It doesn’t matter if you’re in a remote area or not, unless you live in a Gated Community, law enforcement already isn’t viable. If somebody breaks into my house and they’re armed, I won’t have the time to call 911 and wait 10 minutes for the Police to arrive.
I can guarantee you that if half of all people were armed, people would think twice before mugging other people.
Fact of the matter is, Accidental firearm deaths are extremely low. AID’s kills more people in the whole world than accidental firearms deaths do. Like I said, I wouldn’t have been born if it wasn’t for firearms, and I’m glad my father did the smart thing and armed himself when working in Brownsville.
Law Enforcement in areas outside of Manhattan are not always fine. They’re also one of the highest funded Police forces too, so no, it can’t always be fine everywhere. Look at East LA.
If someone breaks into your house and they’re armed, even if you do give them everything they want, you still have a chance of getting killed. To them, you’re just another witness who could get them caught.
We don’t live in a Make-Believe land where nobody gets hurt and everybody is fine. People can’t always depend on the Police and must sometimes rely on themselves.
Well – I intended to only post one blog entry here but after reading some of your (rawTOP) follow-up posts I am compelled to add an additional comment.
I think everyone in this Country should read the US Constitution at least once. If you had read it then you would know that the US Constitution does NOT say that blacks aren’t full people, I know this to be fact because I have studied Constitutional law for quite a number of years. The fact is that Slavery was never in the US Constitution (or Blacks as you prefer to reference Slavery). It was the absence of any law stating for or against slavery that caused the confusion and made for the addition of the 13th and 14th amendment. The US Constitution (minus the amendments) is just a document that states how the government is to be arranged and the requirements for each branch. It is the amendments attached to the Constitution that dictates federal law.
For instance in the issue of slavery the argument was that the slave owning states declared that human beings were PROPERTY. Therefore right to own prosperity is protected by the US Constitution. It took the 13th amendment added after the Civil War to establish owning another human being as illegal. Then the argument was when slave owners demanded reparations for property (slaves) that were confiscated by the US Government. This in turn took the 14th amendment. The states then tried to stop blacks from voting, this is turn took the addition of the 15th amendment.
No one, the United States founding fathers included could have foreseen the interpretation of the US Constitution this way. Constitutional signers such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. Even though Jefferson released his slaves after he died, the very fact that they were slave owners left the US Constitution up to interpretation and their ‘true intentions.
With respect to your comment about gun control. To believe in gun control you would have to believe that the second clause of the Second Amendment is entirely dependent on the first. Despite the fact that many expert grammarians have weighed in to the contrary. You can see the folly of this plainly in a reworked version of the Second Amendment:
“A well educated citizenry, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear books, shall not be infringed”.
Does this mean that only libraries can own books? Does this mean only States can own books? Does this mean people can’t own books or carry them?
The Second Amendment states:
“A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
In other words to believe in gun control, you have to believe that the only reason for a citizen to have arms is for militia duty. They have no individual right to own a firearm. The words “the people” would have to mean a group not individuals. This makes little sense. How can a group have rights that individuals don’t? No one interprets the first Amendment and “the right of the people” therein to mean a group. That would mean individuals have no right to free speech but instead only groups do. * In 1990, the Supreme Court observed in U.S. v. Verdugo-Urquidez, that the right to keep and bear arms, like
rights protected by the First, Fourth, Ninth, and Tenth Amendments, is an individual right held by “the people,” which the court defined as all “persons who are a part of a national community”.
You have the right to ban firearms in your own home – but that right Constitutionally ends at your front door. If you don’t like handguns then don’t have one. But you can’t Constitutionally ban them for everyone – even though New York has done it – it has not had a case go to the Federal Supreme Court to challenge that law. There has so far not been a signifcant challenge to NY’s law. It could happen – but so far it has not.
If someone breaks into my house and they are armed then I will definitely give them what they want (and perhaps what they don’t expect). It’s not worth my life to sit by passively and be subjected to the will of some armed thugs who might kill me anyways even if I didn’t put up a fight.
By the way, the Constitution says that all people are full people. I don’t know where you got that.
Actually, New York doesn’t do that. While New York does have strict gun control laws, I can still carry my Glock 23 around concealed.
From SDBBFUN: If someone breaks into my house and they are armed then I will definitely give them what they want (and perhaps what they don’t expect). It’s not worth my life to sit by passively and be subjected to the will of some armed thugs who might kill me anyways even if I didn’t put up a fight.
This is exactly what I’m talking about. I may get killed anyways even if I do give in to his demands. I won’t sit around submissively and watch this happen. I may not be able to call the Police in that Situation, but I can get my gun out and shoot a load right between his eyes.
I just can’t believe these comments coming from the gay community who so actively disagree with RawTop. People out there HATE gay people and our community can’t do anything but latch onto how great John McCain and Republicans are GOOD for the country? Help us all!! Come on people how CAN you even consider a republican in November?
I believe John McCain is a good person, and he has his own ideals on how to help America. Sadly, like I said, his Vice President is way out of anything I would even consider, and considering how old he is, well, if he dies, I don’t want to see her as President. She wants to mine and drill the United States to hell.
Universal Healthcare for Children was just dropped in Hawaii for children, because even rich families who could afford healthcare for their children dropped it too, and it resulted in having healthcare that was unpayable by the state. The intent of it was to have people who couldn’t afford it have their children taken care of. Next time, they need to put some safeguards in place, such as if you make over a certain amount that you must be required to purchase healthcare, and if you don’t the state can take care of you.
Well, the 14,627 AID’s deaths a year- in the USA, certainly by far beats the deaths of firearms per year in the United States.
The enemy force I’m combating is anyone who wishes to do me or anybody around me harm. Face it, we don’t live in a world filled with such wonderful upstanding citizens, you have to be realistic. Firearms will always be easy to get. England’s Police Force used to be a completely firearm free force. Not anymore.
